How to Create a Twitter Account

The first step on Twitter is to sign up for your account and brainstorm ideas for a “handle,” which is essentially your screen name. Using key words in your handle is optimal for SEO and is an effective way to allow people to find and follow you. When writing your 160 character Twitter bio, follow these tips and add your location, such as “South Jersey”. In order for consumers to associate your Twitter account with your company, make your profile picture something that has a strong tie to your business, such as a logo. There are thousands of great company Twitter accounts out there, including, Coca Cola, American Airlines and The Press of Atlantic City.

From here, it is important to continue your company’s progress. Mike Blinder, president of The Blinder Group, a business that helps media companies maximize revenues through their multimedia assets, once said, “Having a new, exciting, compelling website, that no one sees, is like having a great billboard in your basement.”

This concept can be applied to Twitter accounts as well: don’t create a Twitter account and then abandon it. If you do, consumers may search for your company, find the correct profile and notice it is dormant—a sign that your company is not “active”—and quite frankly, you are hiding your company’s potential!

The Walk-away: Creating an appropriate handle, bio, and profile, along with planning on maintaining your Twitter account, will start you off on the right foot to build a fan base for your business online.
